JOHOR BAHRU: The Crown Prince of Johor Tunku Ismail
Ibni Sultan Ibrahim has this time fired a lengthier salvo in the current spat
of sorts raging between him and Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz,
in the form of a post on the Johor Southern Tigers Facebook page.
“You are a minister, not a God from the heavens who
lords over everybody,” said Tunku Ismail in his post entitled ‘Message for
Malaysians’, an apparent jab at Nazri, who is only named in the post as ‘a
minister’.
“Do not think that the people of this country exist to
provide you with position and wealth. The position exists for you to serve the
people.”
Tunku Ismail, popularly known as TMJ (Tunku Mahkota
Johor), had earlier criticised prime minister Najib Razak for not turning up at
the Nothing2Hide forum in Kuala Lumpur
this month.
Nazri had responded to that with an implied threat at
a press conference at the University
of Malaya last Saturday.
“If you hold an important post as royalty in the
state, and if you start to say things, if then we (the government) hit you
back, don’t get angry,” he had said.
“I think he should keep out of politics, otherwise he
may be subjected to the same rule. We will whack him.”
Tunku Ismail questioned the minister’s hostile
response to his ‘gentle reminder’, and wondered what chance the rakyat would
have if he himself received such a reply.
“I never told anybody to step down or resign, only to
remind politicians of their roles and responsibilities. If you cannot deal with
that, it just shows your arrogance to the people.”
“I envision a future that every person has a right to
voice their opinions. However, that is not the case in Malaysia today,
where ministers think they are untouchable,” he said, and stressed that his
speaking out was in his capacity as the leader of his rakyat, and on behalf of
Johoreans and Malaysians.
“I am not a politician. I am only answerable to Allah,
my Sultan and the people of Johor. I do not do the bidding of some
puppet-master who pulls the strings,” Tunku Ismail said. “Johor only has place
for those who want to serve the people, not for those who want to garner votes
for their own interests,” said Tunku Ismail.
He warned Nazri to not use him to divert attention
from national issues, and said that the country needed clean and transparent
politicians who would carry out their duties with sincerity and integrity.
