One Little Indian Boy (Merdeka 1996 & 1997)

After six weeks of campaigning, the Alliance swept 51 of the 52 seats.
The election cemented the coalition of different
ethnic parties which agreed for Umno president Tunku Abdul Rahman to be
appointed Chief Minister of Malaya. His
Cabinet comprised six Malays, three Chinese and one Indian.
The Pan-Malayan Islamic Party, later known as PAS, was
the only opposition party not wiped out, winning the Krian constituency in
Perak.
The electorate rejected outright Parti Negara, led by
former Umno president Datuk Onn Jaafar, the socialist Labour Party, People’s
Progressive Party and other minor groups.
Helicopters and motor launches were among the modes of
transport for bringing out ballot papers from rural areas to counting centres.
Newspapers reported that political parties tried
building enthusiasm for the polls during the five-week campaign but only got
lukewarm response from the 1.28 million eligible voters.
The 1955 election was the final step towards Independence. In 1957,
the Federation of Malaya gained complete Independence
from Britain.
Tunku subsequently led the Alliance
to victories in the 1959, 1964 and 1969 general elections.
After the May 13 riots of 1969, the Alliance transformed into a larger coalition
- Barisan Nasional - with Tun Abdul Razak Hussein leading it to victory in
1974.
Barisan has never lost control of the government
although twice – in 1969 and 2008 - it failed to secure a two-thirds majority.
Throughout the decades, voting patterns reflected the
prevailing communal moods.
Issues that determined the voting pattern in 1955
included the culmination of Malay nationalism, the rise of anti-colonial
sentiments and socialist based parties; Communist insurgency and state of
emergency (1948-1960); and education and better condition of life for working
class.

Malaya's
first general election
In an overwhelming victory, the Alliance sweeps 51 of the 52 seats contested
in the Legislative Council Federal Elections (MPP) 1955. Read more...

AFTER more than a century of colonial rule, the rise
of nationalism saw the British loosening their grip on Malaya.
The first local elections was held in Malacca in
November 1951 but all the nominations were returned unopposed. Elections for George Town municipal council in Penang
a month later were the first popular elections in the Federation of Malaya. Kuala Lumpur held its
municipal council elections in 1952.
This was followed by the introduction of a new
Constitution. The United Malays National Organisation (Umno), Malayan Chinese
Association (MCA) and Malayan Indian Congress (MIC) formed a partnership known
as Alliance.
The Malayan Union was formed on April 1, 1946. Umno
was established the same year to oppose the Malayan Union, which curbed the
powers of the Malay Rulers. MIC was set up the same year, and MCA in 1949.
The Malayan Union was replaced by the Federation of
Malaya in 1948.

Nominations for the first federal election were on
June 15, 1955, when a total of 129 candidates – 111 from seven parties and 18
independents – filed their nomination papers for 52 parliamentary seats.

Malaysia’s Road to Merdeka and Beyond: An Interactive Timeline
On Aug 31, Malaysia marks her 57th year as a
free and sovereign state. As we celebrate the country’s 57 years of nationhood
since achieving independence in 1957, follow her people’s journey to Merdeka
and beyond.

locals to administer the country. Members are appointed to certain portfolios
such as Domestic Affairs, though the British retain executive authority and
political control through posts such as High Commissioner and Secretary

THE ROLE PLAYED BY NON-MALAY POLITICAL LEADERS IN
ENSURING RACIAL HARMONY WAS CRUCIAL TO TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN’S NEGOTIATIONS FOR AN
INDEPENDENT MALAYA.
TUNKU Abdul Rahman’s greatest achievement lay not only
on what he managed to get out of the British but also in the crafting of a
formula to manage race relations that made Malaysia’s independence and
subsequent nation building possible.
The Alliance
may not have been Tunku’s idea but it was he who recognised its importance and
nurtured the fledgling coalition until it acquired the strength and authority
to ask for independence.
Political stability being the key to getting freedom,
Tunku relied greatly on the support and contributions of the leaders of the
three main parties of the Alliance
– Umno, MCA and MIC – and they functioned as members of a closely-knit family
and not as leaders of communal political parties trying to be heroes to their
own people.

KUALA LUMPUR: Leaving behind a prosperous
and peaceful Malaysia
for future generations was among the three Merdeka points outlined by Datuk
Seri Najib Tun Razak (pic) for the continuity of the nation to be
competitive on the international arena.
The Prime Minister
outlines:
* First Merdeka
Message: Strengthen the solidarity of Malaysians, including unity in greif, in
the face of challenges and tests.
* Second Merdeka
Message: Cultivate confidence that we can achieve any ambitions as a nation if
there is unity.
* Third Merdeka
Message: Leaving behind a prosperous and peaceful Malaysia

In
his speech at the 57th National Day celebrations at the Dewan Tunku Abdul
Rahman in the Malaysian Tourism Centre (Matic) here, he said solidarity among
the people who united in grief, for instance, was witnessed during the ceremony
to honour the victims of the MH17 tragedy, which was the highest honour never
before accorded to civilians

Prince who was ‘the
happiest PM’
Tunku was tireless
in his efforts to integrate the various races and work out compromises in order
to maintain harmony.
TUNKU Abdul Rahman (1902-1990)
was a figure who rightly belongs to our present age – one who could reconcile
liberalism, conscience and magnanimity while possessing power.

He was not only Malaya’s first elected Prime Minister but also the man
who led the country to independence, hence his title Bapa Kemerdekaan (Father
of Independence). He is also known as Bapa Malaysia (Father
of the Nation), for bringing about the present wider federation of Malaya,
Sarawak and Sabah in 1963.

Tunku hailed "Merdeka!" seven times, each shout echoed by thousands
of people.
