Johor businesses see better times with tourism boom

JOHOR BARU: Local business operators here are anticipating that 2012 will end on a high note for them with the opening of Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park next month, just two months after the launch of Legoland Malaysia, as they will further boost tourist arrivals in Johor.

Businesses here are happy that Nusajaya, which is just 20 minutes away by road from the state capital, will help attract tourists stay longer with its two theme parks.

The Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park offers attractions such as Sanrio, Hello Kitty Town, The Little Big Club and LAT’s Place.

Themed Attractions and Resorts Sdn Bhd, the operational and management company for Khazanah Nasional Bhd’s leisure & tourism division, has projected 500,000 visitors and RM35 million in ticket sales within a year with the opening of the second theme park in Johor.

Restaurant operator Razali Ismail said since Iskandar Malaysia came into being, there has been a 20 to 30 per cent increase in tourist arrivals, in particular from Singapore, to the Danga Bay area.

He said his Singgah Selalu Restaurant has been busy dishing out local delights to more customers of late and was planning to have more Johor dishes on its menu and extend its business hours.

"Operating 24 hours nowadays will be worth it as we are confident to get more revenue," said Razali.

Legoland Malaysia, which opened on Sept 15, is targeting some 1.5 million visitors and generate over RM100 million in the first year of operation. The Legoland Water Park is expected to come on stream in the second half of 2013 followed by Legoland Hotel in 2014.
