Why I support Olivia Chow | Guest Columnist | Columnists | Opinion | Toronto Sun

Why I support Olivia Chow | Guest Columnist | Columnists | Opinion | Toronto Sun

TORONTO - Scandals have put our city on display internationally during this municipal election.
But Torontonians can be proud of our many local heroes that have helped to build the city’s positive reputation over many decades.
Heroes who have been close to the heart of the city’s needs, listening, caring, acting — to strengthen the public good.
They have given us a legacy that helped us build a better Toronto.
Think of Jane Jacobs, the urban planner who fought the Spadina expressway; Charles Pascal, who helped bring in all-day kindergarten; the late Dr. Sheela Basrur, who helped to lead the fight against SARS; Reverend Brent Hawkes, who fought for equal rights, including the right to marry, for lesbians and gays.
I add Olivia Chow to this list of city builders because she has been at the forefront of just about every struggle for justice in this city. Talk about public good!
Chow helped “pave the way” for bike lanes, the TTC student Metropass, and translation services in over 140 languages for 911 calls.
When a Toronto Sun reporter called me on a freezing Sunday morning in 1997 to tell me yet another homeless man had frozen to death in a city parking garage, Chow, then a city councillor, worked with me to hammer out a press release calling for more shelters and keeping up the pressure for results.
She knew how to access resources like tents and sleeping bags to help convince street youth to leave their squat in a contaminated silo on the city’s waterfront.
More important, she knew the value of the long-term solution — affordable housing.
She joined me and former Toronto mayors John Sewell and Barbara Hall on a community walk in the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood to showcase good housing and to call for the federal government to provide more.
It was Chow, as an NDP MP, who helped to ensure $1.6 billion for affordable housing was added to the 2005 federal Liberal budget.
For decades, Chow was the mover and shaker at City Hall on child and youth issues, women’s rights, affordable daycare, student nutrition projects, AIDS grants, immigration and literacy.
She was a brilliantly effective leader because she worked across party lines.
This election has focused mostly on transit and it’s great that people in our city care about it.
Chow’s transit plan is the one that reaches out to include economically struggling parts of the city, where needs are greatest.
She also recognizes you have to have somewhere to transit to and from.
A parent needs to be able to get to a childcare spot that is safe and affordable.
A senior needs to know he or she can still access fitness programs at the seniors’ centre.
A new Canadian needs to know the library will still have English as a Second Language classes to take.
Chow is not the loudest shouter in macho election debates, but she has always shone in her unpretentious dedication to social justice, urban progress and equality.
Her ability to make city hall work has produced results for the citizens of Toronto.
We need her strengths more than ever.

Wading into Obama row, Dr M says Chinese are rich and Indians are lawyers in Malaysia | Malaysia | The Malay Mail Online

The nation’s
longest-serving prime minister compared it to the situation in the United States,
which he said has no equality at all and where the richest one per cent of the
population control all the wealth.
“In Malaysia,
despite our policies and all that, do you see the Chinese as the poorest people
in this country?” Dr Mahathir told reporters after a book launch at the Institute of Diplomatic and Foreign Relations here.
“And the Indians are
the lawyers in this country, the professionals, doctors and all that. Those who
didn’t come to Malaysia
are not so fortunate.”
Dr Mahathir had quoted
Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, who mentioned the inequality in
the US
in his best-selling book The Price of Inequality.
Malaysia, which is 60 per cent
Malay-Muslim, has come under global scrutiny with a series of controversies
affecting the rights of non-Muslims, most notably a government ban against
Christians from referring to God as “Allah”.

Kuala Lumpur bags sixth spot in best performing Asian cities survey, beating Singapore | Malaysia | The Malay Mail Online

Kuala Lumpur bags sixth spot in best performing Asian cities survey, beating Singapore | Malaysia | The Malay Mail Online

Kuala Lumpur was ranked the 6th top performing Asian city ahead of Shanghai and Singapore, thanks to an “impressive job growth”, a US-based think tank revealed today.
Milken Institute’s first ranking of the economic performance of Asia’s major cities was based on actual economic performance assessing job and income growth, and the strength of industries on the extent of economic value they add, it said in a statement.
The Best-Performing Cities Asia 2014: the Region’s Most Dynamic Economies ranked six Chinese cities in its top 10, with Shenzhen leading the way.
Guangzhou took the second spot, followed by Chengdu and Tianjin. Delhi was fifth , Singapore ranked eighth and Shanghai was at 10th spot.
“Above all other factors, it is job creation that drives the formation and expansion of the middle class in Asia’s most dynamic cities,” said Milken Institute’s chief research officer Ross DeVol, who was also one of the authors of the study.
He added that the data-based index highlights the urban economies that are doing the best job in both creating jobs and transitioning to a higher value-added, more sustainable, growth rate.
The report noted that KL recorded the third strongest job growth over the past five years, and its ranking was supported by a high per-capita household income.
Unemployment rate was at 3.2 per cent last year, with the labour force of over 900,000 people, it noted, adding that 35 per cent of the labour force has tertiary education.
“... with a large domestic market and an established financial sector, Kuala Lumpur has lots of opportunity for future growth,” the report said.

Reiki Sushi & Asian Bistro in Wilton Serves Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Malaysian Food - Hartford Courant

Reiki Sushi & Asian Bistro in Wilton Serves Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Malaysian Food - Hartford Courant

Reiki Sushi &
Asian Bistro's huge menu encompasses Japanese, Chinese and Thai, and Reiki is
the only place in Fairfield
County
serving Malaysian
food.
That we can eat roti
canai, Malaysian street
food, in upscale Wilton
is a very good thing. The warm, airy flat bread, with a golden griddled pattern
is served with a bowl of exuberantly spicy chicken curry.

How to eat it? Tear a
piece of roti and dip it in the sauce, or scatter torn pieces in the sauce and
let them soak up the curry. The bowl ($4.25) revealed two small and tender
slices of chicken breast. We devoured the bread. And when my dining companions
weren't looking, I drank the rest of the curry sauce from the bowl.

The Biggest Mistakes I See on Resumes, and How to Correct Them | Laszlo Bock | LinkedIn

The Biggest Mistakes I See on Resumes, and How to Correct Them | Laszlo Bock | LinkedIn

I've sent out hundreds of resumes over my career, applying for just about every kind of job. I've personally reviewed more than 20,000 resumes. And at Google we sometimes get more than 50,000 resumes in a single week.
I have seen A LOT of resumes.
Some are brilliant, most are just ok, many are disasters. The toughest part is that for 15 years, I've continued to see the same mistakes made again and again by candidates, any one of which can eliminate them from consideration for a job. What's most depressing is that I can tell from the resumes that many of these are good, even great, people. But in a fiercely competitive labor market, hiring managers don't need to compromise on quality. All it takes is one small mistake and a manager will reject an otherwise interesting candidate.
I know this is well-worn ground on LinkedIn, but I'm starting here because -- I promise you -- more than half of you have at least one of these mistakes on your resume. And I'd much rather see folks win jobs than get passed over.
In the interest of helping more candidates make it past that first resume screen, here are the five biggest mistakes I see on resumes.
Mistake 1: Typos. This one seems obvious, but it happens again and again. A 2013 CareerBuilder survey found that 58% of resumes have typos.

Francis Pegahmagabow: Canadian War Hero
He was the most decorated First Nations soldier in the history of the Canadian military, but very few people have ever heard of Francis Pegahmagabow.
From the time he signed on in September 1914, until the war ended on Nov. 11, 1918, Francis fought. In fact, of the over 600.000 Canadians who served, he was one of only 39 in the Canadian Expeditionary Force to be awarded the Military Medal and two bars for valour.
In a quiet corner of the old cemetery on Wasauksing First Nation, his military stone stands alone, But the legend of Cpl. Pegahmagabow has lived on this reserve now for almost a century.
At 81-year-old Priscilla Pegahmagabow visits her father-in-law's grave with the help of her daughter, Teresa McInnes Pegahmagabow. (CBC)
“He was a good man,” says his daughter-in-law, 81-year-old Priscilla Pegahmagabow, visiting the cemetery with the help of her daughter, TeresaMcInnesPegahmagabow.
“[It’s] very sad, that I didn’t get to know him,”  says Teresa, who was born just a few weeks after Francis Pegahmagabow passed away.
